Ease of Cleaning

Overview

Cleaning should not require confined‐space gymnastics, special crews, or shutdowns that derail operations. Mercer designs separators so operators can access, remove, and clean internal components quickly and safely. When cleaning is straightforward, separators stay efficient longer and spend more time running instead of being offline.

Most separators don’t fail because gravity separation “doesn’t work.” They fail because cleaning the internals is so difficult that operators delay it—or avoid it entirely. Mercer eliminates that barrier by engineering plate geometry, tank layout, and access points to be genuinely operator-friendly.

The Engineering Behind It

The Multi-Pack™ removable plate design is built so operators can pull the entire pack straight out, visually inspect every surface, and pressure-wash it clean in minutes. There has never been a Mercer pack pulled out of a tank where you couldn’t see through from one side all the way to the other. That level of visibility is intentional—and it is something no bundled plastic media design can match.

Why this matters:
In corrugated plastic packs and honeycomb bundles, the geometry dissipates pressure washer energy across hundreds of pockets, ribs, and corrugations. The spray never penetrates to the core. Once solids migrate into the middle of those bundles, they cannot be removed. The media looks clean from the outside, but the center remains clogged, guaranteeing rapid fouling as soon as the system goes back online.

Mercer’s flat-plate geometry with integral Chimney Zone™ channels solves this failure mode. The open, wide-gap enhanced-gravity plates allow cleaning straight through, even on Mercer’s largest coalescer packs. No dead pockets. No hidden corners. No rigid tubes or plastic chambers blocking access.

The Multi-Pack™ is also a single, self-contained rectangular structure, lifted vertically by self-leveling bars. Other designs may require removing 20–30 irregular bundles—each slippery, fouled, and awkward to handle—creating safety risks, long cleaning cycles, and inconsistent reinstallations. Mercer’s single-lift design turns a multihour ordeal into a predictable, efficient maintenance task.

The removable design also virtually eliminates confined space entry, reducing both regulatory burden and the cost of specialized cleaning crews.

What It Solves

Real-World Impact

Operators spend less time fighting fouled, inaccessible bundles and more time keeping the facility running. Because cleaning is simple—and verifiable—it happens on schedule. That means the separator maintains stable performance between cycles instead of cycling through fouling, bypassing, and premature shutdowns. Ease of cleaning is one of the primary reasons Mercer systems maintain high, consistent performance over decades and deliver lower operating costs.

FAQs: Ease of Cleaning

Q.

What makes Mercer separators easier to clean than typical designs?

A.

The Multi-Pack™ removable plate structure lifts out as one unit and can be cleaned straight through—no pockets, tubes, or corrugations that trap sludge or block pressure-washer access.

Q.

Do Mercer systems require confined space entry for routine cleaning?

A.

In most cases, no. The removable Multi-Pack™ eliminates the need to enter the tank during normal maintenance.

Q.

How long does a typical cleaning cycle take?

A.

It depends on solids load, but Mercer systems consistently clean faster because the plate pack is one piece, open-flow, and fully accessible.

Q.

Why do other coalescers look clean outside but foul again immediately?

A.

Plastic bundles dissipate wash pressure across corrugations and pockets. The outer surface rinses, but the interior remains clogged. Mercer’s flat-plate geometry avoids this problem.

Q.

Can Mercer assess my cleaning challenges before recommending a solution?

A.

Yes. A free site audit and testing will reveal whether cleanability is impacting performance. If a Mercer system will not provide meaningful improvement, you will know before committing.
